Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles handed over first e-Crafter light commercial vehicles to biggest customers. Untill summer of 2018 first production models will serve as test beds for practical use in daily service.

First e-Crafter users are mostly package delivery services, energy suppliers, trades businesses and individual retailers whose vehicles cover between 70 and 100 kilometres per day. Many of their drives also include constant stops and starts, which are very demanding for battery life. According to Volkswagens analisyes on more than 210.000 driving profiles of 1500 customers such are 85 percent of drives in urban environment.

Volkswagen e-Crafter shares basic architecture and technical details with internal combustion Crafters, but instead of diesel engine it has a 100 kW electric motor which allows speeds up to 90 kph. Lithium-ion batterry is completely integrated in the underbody of the cars, so it does not take any space in cargo compartment, which shares its dimensions with other Crafters. With the capacity of 35,8 kWh it allows for arround 160 kilometers of reach. At a CCS charging station supplying 40 kW it can be charged up to 80 per cent after just 45 minutes and at AC wallbox supplying 7.2 kW alternating current the battery can be charged to 100 per cent within 5 hours 20 minutes.
