There is a new hybrid version of the BMW X5, the xDrive40e which, in addition to its four‑cylinder, two‑liter, gas‑powered engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, also has an electric motor with a system output of 230 kW (313 hp), and an average consumption of 3.4 liters of fuel, and 15.4 kWh of electricity.

During an all‑electric drive, the lithium‑ion batteries power the electric motor, which in turn powers all four wheels through the eight‑speed Steptronic gearbox, but the maximum speed is reduced to 120 km/h.
