While Google is still trying to develop their Ara modular phone with nothing solid to show for it so far, the competition is keeping busy.
The Nexpaq phone case has recently appeared on Kickstarter and it shamelessly copies Google's modular phone idea. Except that this is a special case. We can mount additional modules on it to further improve the characteristics of the phone. The Nexpaq case has room for six modules – additional speakers, flashlight, SD card reader, and a whole range of sensors such as a thermometer. A total of 12 different accessories are available for the case and the possibility of additional batteries could be the most attractive feature. While the case is equipped with a 1000 mAh battery, each battery module increases the battery by 30 percent. With enough modules, a phone with a Nexpaq case could be powered for several days. The Nexpaq is currently (expected to be available in January 2016) designed for only a few of the most popular phones, such as iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6 Edge.
