In the BMW Welt in Munich Bavarian company has introduced BMW iFE.18, electric racer, which will be used by the BMW i Andretti Motorsport team in the fifth season of Formula E, which starts in Saudi Arabia in December.

Formula E is developing. What was once a championship, established to promote electric propulsion has now become one of the strongest racing series in the world. Even more, next year, new generation of racecars are about to take the racetrack. And among the teams, we can now welcome a new member, one of strongest in car industry, when it comes to electric drive, BMW, who has today presented their team for the next season, led by legendary Formula 1 driver, Mario Andretti.

The team has been named BMW i Andretti Motorsport team, while the racecar also has a name and is called BMW iFE.18. “Formula E is not only an innovative and spectacular race series that has established itself as one of the top race series in the world with a totally new approach to sustainability and events within just a few years,” said Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development and Motorsport. He was also the man, who revealed the racecar to the world.

While the exterior shape of the car is the same as with any other team, under the carbon fiber body, there is genuine BMW technology. It is actually a bit similar to the one, BMW is using on production cars, albeit much more sophisticated and stronger. To put it in numbers, the car will weight a bit over 900 kilograms and is going to be equipped with single electric motor, providing 250 kilowatts of power. From zero to 100 kilometers per hour it will only need 2,8 seconds, while the top speed is claimed to be 240 kilometers per hour.

Behind the wheels of the cars with numbers 27 and 28 are going to be two drivers, that have been part of the BMW team in DTM, Alexander Sims and António Félix da Costa. Latter has also been a member of Formula E circus since the first season and is very happy that he will eventually be able with BMW badge on his Formula E racecar. “I know Formula E really well and was always convinced that BMW would enter as a manufacturer one day. Now, to be part of this team is an incredible motivator.”
