New Nissan Leaf was honoured with the title 2018 Wold Green Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show and became the first all electric car since this category was established twelve years ago.

It was the only all electric finalist in the category, where it competed with BMW 530e iPerformance and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid in the place of other two finalists. To be eligible for the award, car had to be new or at least substantially revised and sold or leased to the public in at least 10 peaces in at least ten major markets in teh last year.In the category also emissions, consumption and advanced powertrain technology were important.

Nissan Leaf as the first all electric car joined the line of winners, which was mostly comprised of hybrid electric cars and some of them would even not be eligible by today's standards. Previous winners were Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota Mirai, BMW i8, BMW i3, Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, Chevrolet Volt, Volkswagen BlueMotion, Honda FCX Clarity, BMW 118d with Efficient Dynamics , Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec and Honda Civic Hybrid.
