It's been made official – The Big Bend by Oiio Studio will be the world's first U-shaped skyscraper and it will be built - in all its curvy glory - on New York City's 57th Street, south of Central Park.
At Oiio Studio they wondered about what would it be like if they substituted height with length, when designing buildings. "If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world. The Big Bend can become a modest architectural solution to the height limitations of Manhattan," they explained on their official website.
Responding to New York City's building laws and increasingly high luxury condo buildings, it will also be the longest building in the world, measuring 4,000 feet (1.22 kilometres) from one end to another.
At Oiio Studio they continued by saying "we can now provide our structures with the measurements that will make them stand out without worrying about the limits of the sky."
We don't yet know when exactly construction work is set to begin, nor was there any information given about when The Big Bend is to be completed, however we definitely look forward to learn more about it and see the final result.
