The partnership and the plans was already announced in 2015, however it has only now become clear where the first theme park will open. Yes, it's Japan!
With powerful storytelling and innovative technology, Universal theme parks offer popular, innovative themed family entertainment experiences based on compelling stories and characters. Nintendo's imaginative worlds will now for the first time, with its stories and characters, be brought to life at Universal theme parks.
As reports go, a whole year after the project plans have been officially made known, Universal will invest ¥40 billion (£250 million) into the Nintendo themed zone, featuring beloved characters such as Mario & Luigi. According to Japanese newspaper Sankei, the partners see the project to be like something in the line of Universal's Harry Potter attraction in Orlando, US, complete with various restaurants and collectibles & toy shops.
Focusing on the character of Mario, the attraction is set to open by 2020, just in time for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
If you happen to be in Tokyo for the Olympics, bare in mind that the theme park will be located in Osaka, which is about 400 kilometers away from Tokyo, so you can't just hop on a bus and see Mario while on your lunch break at the Olympic venue. Plus, be prepared to queue at the entrace. For quite a while.
