DARPA program manager Dr. Gill Pratt said: "It's a pile of aluminum and copper wire and software. I don't cheer for my laptop. But people cheer for these [robots]." 

Before the official start of the DARPA robotics challenge, competitors were able to do a little 'dress rehearsal'. Since there were no major mishaps, everyone expected things to go smoothly when the competition starts.
