From start to finish he was under constant pressure by Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver and current champion Lucas di Grassi, who did not manage to get past Vergne, but can nevertheless be very satisfied with his result, as he secured his first podium this season.
Just after first two laps Mahindra Racing driver Nick Heidfeld was forced to retire due to technical problems, and the same almost happened to Sebastiem Buemi. He managed to limp to the pits after hitting the wall and damaging his rear axle. He switched the car and returned to the race. Di Grassi's teammate (and winner of the previous race in Mexico) Daniel Abt was forced back into pits after having trouble with his seat belt after car change and lost any chance for good position.
The battle between Vergne and di Grassi in front was joined by DS Virgin driver Sam Bird in the last few laps of the race. Bird tried to push di Grassi from the second place but had no success in doing so and all three drivers kept their positions to the end of the race.
