Volkswagen is preparing a new factory team for development of e-racecars.

Electric sports, or more appropriately, electric racing is something, that is becoming a thing at Volkswagen. It looks like all those records and victories have gave them enough energy to go and push the idea of making something more. This is why they are now making a new e-strategy in motorsport, where “R electric sports car will play a pioneering role beyond 2019“.

Making this plan happen, Volkswagen is going to build a team of engineers that will have a full factory support. Understandably, substantial part of development will initially be based on ID.R racecar, which has proven itself numerous times by now. Furthermore, this plan, a new beginning is also going to bring the final chapter Volkswagen’s combustion engine era in motorsport, which has been in later years marked by a successful racecar, the Polo GTI R5.

“Volkswagen Motorsport broke new ground with the ID.R, and with its records around the world it demonstrated the enormous potential of electric drive. Now is the time for the next step towards the future: in motorsport, Volkswagen is resolutely committing to e-mobility and will say goodbye to factory-backed commitments using internal combustion engines,” says Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand with responsibility for Technical Development. “In addition to the ID.R as a technological pioneer, the MEB will in future be the second, production-related pillar in Volkswagen’s motorsport program.”
